77 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURCHAT, Ambrose S. Ambrose was born on September 6, 1914 in Wilno, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on June 4, 1940. He served with the 1st Canadian Army in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany during World War II. He was promoted to Platoon Sergeant on August 1, 1943. He saw action in Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Scheldt. He was discharged on January 19, 1946 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Defence Medal. He was a member of Barry’s Bay Legion Branch 406 for 48 years. Ambrose passed away on April 23, 1994. BURKETT, Stanley Roy Stanley was born on August 14, 1923 in Lowbanks, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on September 9, 1942. He served with the Army Service Corps in France, Germany, Holland, England, and Belgium during World War II. He was a truck driver and drove ammunition to the front lines. He was discharged in 1945 and was a truck driver in civilian life. Stanley has been a member of Port Colborne Legion Branch 56 for 10 years. BURGESS, Bruce T. Bruce was born in Amherst, NS on November 29, 1932. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 29, 1951. In his early career, he served in various training and operational roles including a tour in Zweibrucken, Germany, and later he ferried 14 fighters across the Atlantic. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1969 and commanded No. 439 and 441 Squadrons. He was promoted to Colonel in 1977 and took over as Base Commander of Comox, BC. In 1980, he was promoted to Brigadier General serving in Europe as Commander of the Canadian Forces Liaison Staff in London and as the Canadian Defence Attaché to the United Kingdom. Upon returning to Canada, he was given the job of Chief of Staff for Air Force Operations in Winnipeg. He was then posted to NORAD Headquarters in Colorado as the Vice Commander of Plans. Bruce took his release into civilian life in November 1987.
