91 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CARTER, John John was born on March 31, 1878 in Port Perry, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 13, 1916. He served with the 58th Canadian Battalion during World War I. John was killed in action in 1916 when a bomb or mortar fire hit the trenches he was in. CASTALLAN, Peter Peter was born on January 3, 1918 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 4, 1939. He trained in Toronto, Trenton and graduated from Malton as a radar navigator. He was stationed in Acklington, England and trained as a Night Fighter. He joined Squadron No. 409 as part of a two man crew as a radar navigator and served in active duty in England until the end of World War II. Peter was mentioned in a dispatch for distinguished service against the enemy. At the end of the war, Peter volunteered for duty in the Far East. He was discharged in September 1945. A member of Orillia Legion Branch 34 for 25 years, he resides in Hawkstone, Ontario with his wife Peggy. CASEY, Gordon Arthur Gordon was born on July 20, 1923 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on August 14, 1941. He was trained as a Temeraire Sea Cadet. His first ship was HMCS Stratford and served as a signalman. After a year, he was transferred to HMCS Brandon where he also served as a signalman. He served throughout the North Atlantic from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland until the end of the war in 1945.
