111 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURLEY, Owen William Owen was born in Port Franks, Ontario on June 17, 1889, he had two brothers and two sisters. He joined the Army on April 28, 1916 in Thedford recruiting centre. He was in the 149th Battalion. He was stationed in Camp Borden until April 20, 1917 then to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he then sailed to England on the Lapland War Ship. Arriving in England he transferred to the Canadian Engineer Branch. They went ahead of troops and built bridges and roads for soldiers to move ahead. Then in the spring of 1918 he spent some months in France. He was transferred back to England in March of 1919. He then left England for Canada on April 29, 1919 on the SS Scotian Ship. He remained in the Army after arriving in Canada until May 17, 1919 and was then discharged. He returned to Port Franks and built a new house for his mother. In 1923, he married Annabelle Lockrey a widow with four children. He was granted some land in Northern Ontario and had to clear so many acres of bush a year. He had four children of his own. He moved back to Port Franks in 1943 and worked at the Pump House for Camp Ipperwash until his death of cancer on September 15, 1953. BUTLER, Beverley Jack Beverley was born in Blenheim, Ontario on February 28, 1933. He enlisted in the Army on November 21, 1950 and served with the 1st Division, 25th Infantry Brigade, RCR in Kobe, Japan and Korea. Corporal Butler was discharged in November 1954 and went on to work in construction until moving to the Bruce Peninsula where he and his family operated Cedar Grove Cottages and Cameron Lake Restaurant. His medals include the Korea Service Medal, United Nations Medal, Peacekeeping Medal and the Volunteer Service Medal. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Beverley passed away on February 19, 2014. BURT, John Earle John was born in Compton, QC on August 7, 1938. He enlisted in the Air Force on April 27, 1955. The 2450 Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron (Aux) stationed in Sherbrooke, QC of which he was an Aircraftsman Second Class was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They were trained as Fighter Control Operators and were responsible for manning the radar equipment associated with the 1950s Cold War Pine Tree DEW Line facilities. These facilities and their service became redundant when most were automated. John was discharged on May 1, 1956. He has been a member of Wiarton Legion Branch 208 for six years.
