117 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMPBELL, Vernon Abbott Vernon was born in Holstein, Ontario on November 2, 1922. He joined the Air Force in 1943 with the 625 Kelstern, England, 170 RAF Hemswell. Vernon was responsible for the nose art of a lady on his squadron’s Lancaster bomber. He still has the template for it today at his home in Mount Forest, Ontario. He received Gold Operational Wings from King George VI for completing 44 bomber raids in Nazi Germany. He was discharged in August of 1945. He also received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Europe Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar for going overseas, European Star Medal and the King George VI Medal. Vernon completed military re-training as a barber. He worked as a barber in Preston for two years and then in Ridgeville for 50 years before retiring to Mount Forest in 1989. CARON, Lawrence Jean Lawrence was born August 10, 1924 in Pain Court, Ontario which is a small town 11 kms west of Chatham, ON or 80 kms east of Windsor, ON. He enlisted in The Royal Canadian Regiment RCR Infantry to do his duty for his country during World War II. His basic training was in Chatham, ON for thirty days then onto Camp Ipperwash; 117 Kms north of Chatham ON for three months, then he and his companions boarded a ship bound for London, England for three weeks of training. From there he was mobile again and boarded another ship and eleven days later landed in Italy. It was then onward to France, Belgium, Holland/Netherlands, Germany and back to Italy. In Italy, he was wounded in the arm and head. He was later issued the Japanese Battle Patch as he and his battalion were going to the Pacific Theatre and his training was moving to the United States but the war ended before he was deployed. After the war ended, he was discharged in London, ON in 1945. He received the following medals for his tour of duty: The Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal. He married Grace Morocco on September 12, 1946 and then moved to Detroit, MI on April 15, 1949. He worked at Chevrolet Gear and Axle for 37 years and 9 months before retiring on March 1, 1987. They have a son Paul and two daughters, Lynn and Lori. He now resides in Plymouth, MI with his wife of 68 years. CARNEGIE, Harry Bigelow Harry was born in Port Perry, Ontario on November 9, 1919. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Canada during World War II. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419. Harry passed away on December 18, 1996.
