He enlisted in the Army on November 12, 1914 and served with the 16th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. John took part in the battles of Kemmel Hill, Sanctuary Wood, Hooge, St. Eloi, Somme, and Vimy Ridge. He was wounded in Vimy Ridge and discharged fromMilitary Hospital at Burlington, Ontario on April 10, 1918. John worked for Hydro in Timmins, Ontario as chief operator in generating plants at Wawaitin and Sandy Falls. He was a member of Timmins Legion Branch 88. John passed away on March 13, 1948. CHAMBERLAIN, Robert S. Robert was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on August 31, 1920. He joined the Elgin Regiment in 1941 and transferred to the Perth Regiment (Stratford). He served in Italy and Holland during World War II. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in attack at Arielli River, Italy in January 17, 1944. While in Holland in the fall of 1944 with the Perth Regiment, he liberated many towns. Robert was discharged in 1946. He was Honourary Lieutenant- Colonel of Elgin Regiment from 1981-1996 and has been Commander of the Order of St. John. He was a member of Lord Elgin Legion Branch 41 for 52 years. Robert passed away on August 3, 2002. CHALLIS, Albert W. Albert was born in St Marys, Ramsay, England on January 4, 1908. Private Albert Challis joined the Army in St Catharines, Ontario on July 3, 1940. He underwent training in Camp Borden before heading overseas. Once there, he served as a driver with 2/10 Dragoons for senior officers and also fulfilled the duties of a batman during World War II. Albert served in Holland, Belgium, France and remained in Germany for one full year after the war, serving as part of the Army of occupation. He was discharged on July 18, 1946. His service earned him the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Albert passed away on August 8, 2000.
