129 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHESSMAN, John Oliver “Jack” Jack was born in Middlesex County on September 29, 1925. He enlisted in the Navy on January 27, 1944. During World War II, he served as an able seaman and did the maintenance of guns. His high seas duties were on HMCS Stellarton K457. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. After his discharge on October 19, 1945, he was employed for five years at London Pure Milk then moved onto London Winery as Plant Industrial Engineer for 42 years. Jack was also a member of Forest Legion Branch 176. He had two sons, Jon and Joel. Jack passed away on October 20, 1998. CHIPCHASE, Blanche Blanche was born in Guisborough, England on December 13, 1918. She joined the Army and served in England during World War II. Blanche was a radar operator during the War and was instrumental in saving the lives of two American pilots. She was discharged in 1945 and married a Canadian soldier, Ken Rowan, and immigrated to Canada. Blanche was a Life Member of the Matachewan Legion Branch 386 and Kirkland Lake Legion Branch 87. She passed away on January 18, 2014. CHILDERHOSE, Leslie W. B. “Les” Les was born in Orillia, Ontario on July 12, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on June 27, 1940 and served with the SD&G Highlanders, 3rd Division, 97th Brigade in England and France during World War II. He was a D-Day Juno Beach survivor with the Canadian Forces. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 Oshawa where he served on the Executive and was a Vice-President. He was a member of Branch 43 for 32 years. He was a very proud Canadian and Legion Member. Les passed away on November 1, 2008.
