131 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHITTY, Charles William “Bill” Bill was born in Brighton, England on May 28, 1924 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1930. At the age of sixteen, Bill enlisted and went overseas in 1941. Due to his age, he was kept in England where he trained to operate and maintain a M7 self-propelled gun called a “Priest” which was equipped with a 105 mm howitzer and a .50 cal. machine gun. Bill transferred to the 3rd Division, 14th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery and was part of the first wave on D-Day. He served in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. After the war, Bill was employed with the Canadian Penitentiary Service. He remained a lifelong friend of Bob Muir and Jimmy Sharp with whom he served. He was a member of the Legion Branch 26 in Sackville, NB, Gravenhurst Branch 302 and 35 years in Gananoque, ON. A brick in Bill’s memory is located in the Juno Beach Centre in Courseuilles-sur-Mer, France. He passed away on February 16, 2008. CHIVERS (ESSER), Catherine Catherine was born in Eda, Holland on December 17, 1922. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division on July 23, 1942 and served in Canada until her discharge on December 20, 1944. Catherine has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for five years. CHIVERS, Calvin William Calvin was born in Port Arthur on January 21, 1913. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in England and Canada with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada during World War II. He was discharged in February 1945. Calvin passed away on September 20, 1979.
