139 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CLELLAND, Alexander Brown Alexander was born in Dunchurch, Ontario on February 20, 1897. He and his brother Thomas enlisted in the 162 Canadian Infantry Battalion in Burks Falls, Ontario and he was sworn in on April 24, 1916. He served in Canada, England and France during World War I. In England, they were transferred to the 4th Battalion. Both men took part in the assault on Vimy Ridge. Both Alex and Thomas were wounded by shrapnel on consecutive days later in the war. Alex was invalided home but Tom was listed as missing in action until one memorable day he turned up unannounced at the Clelland Farm near Dunchurch. Alexander passed away on November 13, 1990. CLELLAND, Thomas Lawrie “Tom” Thomas was born in Dunchurch, Ontario on May 9, 1895. He and his brother Alexander Clelland enlisted in the 162 Canadian Infantry Battalion in Burkes Falls, Ontario and he was sworn in on March 27, 1916. He served in Canada, England and France during World War I. In England, they were transferred to the 4th Battalion. Both men took part in the assault on Vimy Ridge. Both Alex and Thomas were wounded by shrapnel on consecutive days later in the war. Alex was invalided home but Tom was listed as missing in action until one memorable day he turned up unannounced at the Clelland Farm near Dunchurch. He was discharged in December 1918. Thomas passed away on September 1, 1973. CLELLAND, Stanley Stanley was born in Dunchurch, Ontario on May 1, 1922. Flying Officer Stanley Clelland enlisted in the Air Force on August 10, 1942 in North Bay, Ontario and was trained as a pilot in Canada before going overseas. He served in Canada and in England with the 6th Bomber Group during World War II. Stan was training to fly the Lancaster Bombers in the UK when the war in Europe came to an end. He was discharged on November 6, 1945. He was a member of Magnetawan Legion Branch 394 for forty years. Stanley passed away on February 18, 2014.
