143 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CODDINGTON, Lawrence E. Lawrence was born in St Marys, Ontario on September 8, 1925. He enlisted in the Army on March 5, 1944 and served with the Algonquin Regiment in Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Lance Corporal Coddington was a qualified typing clerk. Lawrence was discharged on June 1, 1946. He returned to St Marys after his service and worked for McKay Grocery, then Marsh’s Wholesale, then Hal Gregory Store, and then to Hutton Transport in 1955. He remained with that company until he retired. Lawrence passed away on June 11, 2001. COLE, Thomas H. “Tom” Tom was born in Gloster Borough, England on January 16, 1909. He enlisted in the Army on August 24, 1942 and served with the Canadian Infantry Corps in the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe during World War II. Private Tom Cole was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was discharged on November 17, 1945 and returned to Canada with the 48th Highlanders. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Defence Medal. He took a carpentry course in Hamilton when he returned from the war. On April 20, 1946 he married Genevieve Beacock of the Nestleton-Blackstock area of Ontario. They didn’t have any children. In 1953, he built their home on Jones Avenue in Oshawa, Ontario. Tom worked with several contractors in the Oshawa area until retirement. He was a member of Simcoe St United Church in Oshawa and was an Elder and a member of the Board of Stewards where he spent many hours doing carpentry work throughout his life. As a matter of fact he died in the church doing what he loved on October 4, 1990. He was buried in the family plot at Cartwright Union Cemetery. COLE, Donald Richard “Don” Don was born on January 24, 1932 in Ottawa, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army as a Special Force Soldier in August 1950. In October 1951, he sailed to Korea as a member of the 1st Battalion PPCLI (D Company). Literally going from dockside to the front lines, Don survived and on November 12, 1954, he enlisted in the RCAF, serving for 25 years until his discharge in the fall of 1977 followed by a further 15 years with the Department of Foreign Affairs. Don and his wife Eleanor (now deceased) raised a family of seven children. One of his sons, Brian Cole, recently retired as a pilot (VIP/Special Missions) from RCAF 412 Squadron. Don’s awards include the Canadian Korea Medal, CVSM (Canada), SSM (Nato), UN Service Medal (Korea) and the CD. Don attends the Eastview, Ontario Branch Legion 462. His memoirs are published in the 2013 Korean War Veteran Memoirs Series.
