145 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COLLINS, Thomas Thomas was born in Birmingham, England on December 17, 1898. He was sent to Afghanistan, with the British Army Expeditionary Force, attached to the motorcycle machine gun corps. He was in Afghanistan for the duration of the war, but stayed for another year, fighting the Afghan’s. He didn’t return home until 1919, immigrated to Canada in 1920, and started homestead farming in Saskatchewan. Saved up enough money to buy two Harley Davidson Motorcycles, with sidecars attached, and started the “Ideal Delivery”. When Canada declared war on Germany in 1939, Thomas signed up joining the British Army in 1940. He was in charge of motorcycle training for the Royal Canadian Engineers teaching the first engineer dispatch riders how to ride Harley’s. They spent many hours on a sand spit in the Saskatchewan River, training to ride in desert and beach conditions. He was transferred to Chilliwack, BC, with the Engineers in 1941, where he was in charge of the motor pool. He was discharged in 1945. Thomas passed away on January 31, 1954. CONSAUL, Herman Leo “Bud” Herman was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 31, 1920. He spent two years in the 48th Highlanders militia unit prior to World War II. When war broke out he “transferred” to the RCAF and served initially in Oshawa and then attended the school for Instructors at Camp Borden. He was a Pilot Instructor in Nova Scotia and Ottawa before proceeding overseas to England where he flew a variety of planes including the Hawker Hurricane. In Bud’s words, “after the war I went back to civy street as a plumber.” CONNORS, Arden J. Arden was born in Uno Park, Ontario on April 11, 1926. He joined the Canadian Army Airborne in October 1943 and was discharged in April 1946. He then joined the Army in August 1950 and served with 2 PPCLI during the Korean War until March 1952. Arden received the USA Presidential Citation, ROK Peace Medal, the USA Bronze Star and the Canadian War Medal. He married Joan. Arden has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 310 in Elk Lake, Ontario and a member of Branch 33 in New Liskeard, ON for 25 years.
