149 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COX, Bruce Edward Bruce was born in Margate, Kent, England on May 5, 1924. He lived in London during the bombing and was a Sergeant Air Cadet flying barrage balloons. He joined the Army in the spring of 1942, the Parachute Regiment in the spring of 1943. He served with the 1st Airborne Division in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Holland. He was taken prisoner at Arnhem and was home for V.E. Day. Bruce was sent to Palestine in 1946/47. He was discharged in March 1948 and came to Canada in 1956. He worked at Avro until the “arrow” lay off when 1 300 workers lost their jobs. On retirement he bought 25 acres north of Port Hope in the Ganaraska Forest and built two log homes. Bruce has also been a speaker for the Memory Project speaking in schools for twenty years. He has been a Past President and Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion. He joined the Pathfinders Re-Enactment Group and parachuted into Arnhem drop zones four times and three times into the “D-Day” zones to honour his fallen comrades. The last time was in 2004 at 80 years old with full equipment as he did in 1944. Bruce has been a member of Bewdley Legion Branch 577. CRAWFORD, Vernon Vernon was born in Sharbot Lake, Ontario on December 28, 1936. He enlisted in the Army on February 10, 1960 and served with the RCASC in Canada and in Northwest Europe. He did his basic training at CFB Borden in 1960 and was posted to CFB Petawawa from 1960-1965. He was in Fort Chambly, Germany from 1965 to 1968 and was posted to CFB Ottawa, mostly as a heavy equipment operator from 1968-1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was posted to LETE Proving Grounds, Orleans, and then from 1978 to 1980 he was posted to CFB Ottawa again before being discharged on December 28, 1980. From 1980 to 1987 upon release from the Army, he chauffeured for the Ambassador of Norway. Vernon retired in 1987. He has been a member of Sharbot Lake Legion Branch 425 for 35 years. COYNE, Glen R. Glen was born in Thessalon, Ontario on January 29, 1927. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 14, 1943 and trained to be a pilot. He served in Canada during World War II. When the war ended Glen worked for Algoma Ore Division as Front Line Supervisor then to Maintenance as Planner. He was a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for fifty years. Glen passed away on December 31, 2004.
