155 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CZORTEK, Bernard Bernard was born in Warlubie, Poland on July 31, 1926. In 1942, at the age of fourteen, he was pulled out of school and placed in “The Underground”. At the age of sixteen, he was on “The Front Lines”, fighting with the Canadian and the British. He served with the Polish Army Corps, 2nd Pol. Comm. Motor Battalion C in Italy and North Africa during World War II. Bernard was one of the few from his battalion to survive the Battle of Monte Casino, a battle of both heroism and sacrifice, for as this battle was won, their beloved Poland had been lost. He was discharged in 1947. Most combatants, including Bernard, were not able to return to their homes, or homeland. He chose to go to Canada after the war and work on a farm in Crossfield, Alberta to pay for his passage over. Later he travelled to Toronto where he met the love of his life, Margaret. When his father was dying, Bernard returned to Poland in 1960, still at great risk that he would not be allowed to return to Canada. He has been a member of Woodbine Heights Legion Branch 22 for 57 years. DALE, Ernest Lawrence Ernest was born in Beeton, Ontario on January 30, 1900. Ernest enlisted in World War I on March 21, 1916. He was in the Canadian 126th (Peel) Overseas Expeditionary Force. Ernest was discharged in 1919 and received the Defence Medal, British War Medal (1914-1918). He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1940 during World War II. Part of his duties included riding a motorcycle, scouting for the Army. Ernest saw action in England and Europe. He was in a crash with the motorcycle and broke a leg. Corporal Dale was discharged in 1944 and received the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (1939-45) and War Medal (1939-45). Ernest returned to Beeton and was later employed as an Electrician at Camp Borden, Military Base. He was a charter member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 421, Beeton. Ernest passed away on March 6, 1969 in Beeton. DAILEY, Gordon Earnest Gordon was born in Axe Lake, Ontario on February 19, 1913. He worked as a logger before enlisting in the Army. He is the son of George Dailey and Lydia Lavilla Dailey (nee Bateman); husband of May Sarah Dailey (nee Goss), and father of Ivan Gordon Dailey and Lorna May Dean (nee Dailey). He served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade in Belgium during World War II. Pte Dailey was killed in action near Adegem, Belgium on September 26, 1944. He is buried in the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Adegem, Belgium.
