173 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOHERTY, Charles Joseph Charles Joseph Doherty was born April 20, 1896 on a farm, one and half miles east of Hesson, Ontario. His parents were Patrick and Katherine Doherty. He was their second of five male children. On November 9, 1917 at the age of twenty, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, 1st Depot Battalion in Kitchener in the category of A-2. Charles saw active duty during World War I in France, Belgium and Holland from 1917 to August 1919 as a Private 1st Class, before returning home to his parent’s farm. When World War II broke out, Charles enlisted again and was drafted from London, Ontario as Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp as a Private in the 24th Field Ambulance. He spent thirty months in the United Kingdom. His record says he was a medical orderly (Ward Master) on troop hospital ships for forty months and reached the position as Corporal. Charles returned to Canada on August 22, 1945. Charles passed away on September 24, 1958. DOOLITTLE, Francis C. Francis was born in Windsor, Ontario on December 22, 1923. He enlisted in RCAF in 1942 and served with 50 Squadron. He served in Canada, England, and on the High Seas. Francis graduated from ABspl and was on loan to the Royal Air Force. He completed 31 missions on Lancasters and was awarded the DFC. He was discharged in 1945. Francis enlisted again in 1951 and spent 5 years as an ERA on HMCS “Maggie” and HMCS St Laurent. He also attended Queen’s Spithead Review and escorted her to Stockholm and return. In 1956, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and was discharged in 1975. Francis has been a member of Elliot Lake Legion Branch 561 for 9 years. DONOVAN, Irvine Irwin Irvine was born in Collingwood, Ontario on January 6, 1925. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 18, 1942 and served with No. 101 (RAF) Squadron during World War II. He was posted in England on July 5, 1943. Irvine was killed in action on April 27, 1944 in the Schweinfurt, Germany. Flight Sergeant II Donovan was awarded the DFM posthumously on January 28, 1946. In 1950, a lake on the OntarioManitoba border was named Lake Donovan in his honour.
