191 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EVA, Clarence Clarence “Sam” Eva was born on February 7, 1926 in Bentinck Township, near Hanover, and attended Hanover Schools. He joined the Canadian Army in Toronto on July 20, 1944. After training in Camp Shilo, he was sent to England but while at sea the war ended. He was then assigned to No 1 kit stores sorting out the personal belongings of those not yet discharged. While there, he signed for service fighting the Japanese in the Pacific but while on leave in Canada, again that war was over. He was discharged on September 15, 1945 and went back to work at Knechtels making furniture until they closed. He then finished his working career at another furniture factory –Heirloom of Canada in Chesley. Along the way, Sam served two terms as a Councillor for the Town of Hanover as well as 27 years as a volunteer on the fire department. Sam and his wife raised four children, three boys and one daughter. His wife, Anne, passed away in 2008. He now resides in the Village Seniors residence in Hanover. Sam has been a member of Hanover Legion Branch 130 for 68 years. EVANS, Mansel C. Mansel was born in Irthlingborough, England on February 22, 1939. He enlisted in the Army on March 11, 1960 and was conscripted into the Royal Army Pay Corps in Devizes, Wiltshire. After receiving basic training, he was posted to Germany as a Pay Clerk to D Comp Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. After six months, he moved to HQ 7th Armoured Regiment as Pay Clerk to 207 Signals Squadron. He was discharged on April 30, 1963. Following military service, he resumed his trade as bricklayer. He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and became an active member in Coe Hill Legion Branch 581 in 1970. He was the President of the Legion Branch for two years. In 1989, Mansel became a Life Member. EVANS, Ivan T. H. Ivan was born in Tay Township in August 1918. Ivan was a member of the Canadian Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force flying with the Royal Air Force during World War II. He was promoted to the Flight Sergeant and presented to the King and Queen and shook hands and spoke with them. He was also cited for distinguished action. Ivan was killed in action during a bombing raid over Germany on July 7, 1942.
