27 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND AIKEN, Gordon Harvey Gordon was born on April 26, 1918 in Ripley, the oldest son of Albert Aiken and Rhetta Treleaven. Gordon was an Officer of Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in World War II after enlisting in the Army on November 7, 1940. He served in England, France, Holland and Germany. He was discharged in January 1946. Upon his return, Gordon practiced law and later, was a juvenile and family court judge in Muskoka, Ontario. Gordon later ran as a Member of Parliament and was re-elected five times. He would then become an author and penned a couple of books including the “The Backbencher”, and was the family historian. He was a member of the Tara, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst Legion Branches for more than sixty years. Gordon passed away on February 11, 2000. ALDIS, Earl J. Earl was born on August 10, 1921 in St. Marys, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served with the Perth Regiment in Italy and Africa during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. Earl returned to his hometown of St. Marys where he worked at Skipper’s Scrap Yard and the St. Marys Cement Company for many years. Earl was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 236 for 25 years. He served as President, and his wife, Helen, served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary. Earl’s family thanks the Legion for their continued devotion and dedication to veterans and to the community at large. Earl passed away on November 13, 1980. AIKEN, Harvey Hellyer Harvey was born on September 21, 1892, the youngest son of Adam and Mary Aiken’s brood of seven. He enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1915 and served in England and France during World War I. His older brother Albert would sign his papers as Lieutenant from his stint as a member of 31st Grey Regiment of 1906. Harvey would be a member of the 160th Bruce Battalion and remain with his group for the duration. He was once wounded in his heel and he would always have a slight limp. Harvey was discharged in 1918. He was a quiet man and spoke little of his time of service, except for a story or two about other family members that were in the trenches with him, such as Louis Ball. Harvey would return after the war to the family business of Aiken Bros Hardware and Harness and he was responsible for mechanical service. He married Laurene Montgomery and continued working at the store until his death in 1974. He was a member of the Tara Legion Branch 383 for twenty years.
