29 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ALDRED, Joel W. Joel was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 18, 1920. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as Squadron Leader/Wing Commander and Bomber Pilot (decorated) in England and Germany during World War II. He was awarded the DFC. Joel was a successful business man and a radio and television personality (Canada and USA) famous for his voice. He was part of the group that launched CFTO Television, the 1st independent television station in Canada, and was the first President of CFTO-TV. He formed the Business Corp Aldred-Rogers Broadcasting with the late Ted Rogers. He was Director and member of various boards and organizations such as Rothmans, CFTO, National Advisory Council on Aging, and WWF. Joel developed personal friendships with Prime Minister Louis St Laurent and John Diefenbaker. An executor of Diefenbaker’s will helped to establish the Diefenbaker Museum. He also formed a business corporation with the late Ted Rogers called Aldred-Rogers Broadcasting. He was also a member of the Port Perry Legion Branch 419. Joel passed away on October 12, 2011. ALDRED, William M. William was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 22, 1922. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as Pilot Officer in England and in Germany during World War II. William was killed in action on July 6, 1944 in Hamburg, Germany. ALDRED, Norman P. Norman was born in Scugog Island on September 2, 1890. He enlisted in the RFC/RAF in 1917 and served in Canada and England during World War I. He was an accountant before joining Proctor and Gamble as Sales Manager in Newport, Kentucky and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He returned to Canada mid 1930’s. Norman passed away on April 20, 1974.
