33 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ALLISON, Melvin “Mel” Melvin was born in Windsor, Ontario on August 28, 1925 and was raised in the small town of Essex in Ontario. He proudly enlisted in the Navy on February 21, 1944 at the age of nineteen, and served/ranked as Cook during World War II. He came back home to Essex and started working for Chrysler Canada in Windsor, ON. Most of his career at Chrysler was in the paint department painting vehicles. He wed the love of his life Velma Girard on December 28, 1950. They continued their life together in Essex and raised five children, four sons and one daughter. Mel loved participating in Legion events at Captain Brien Branch 201 in Essex where he was a life member and had many friends there. Velma passed away in 2013. Melvin passed away on September 4, 1999. He is still greatly missed by his children and grandchildren. AMERY, George E. George was born in Sussex, England on June 13, 1891. He joined the Army and served with the 102 Battalion. He served in Canada, England and France during World War I. George was discharged in May 1917. He has been a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144. ALLISON, Robert O. Robert was born in Maxwell, Ontario on March 6, 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on March 13, 1942 and served with the Lorne Scots and the 48th Highlanders as a draughtsman and dispatch rider during World War II. Robert served in Italy, where he fought in the battle for Ortona, as well as Belgium, Holland and Germany. Following his discharge on November 17, 1945, he went on to work in lithography for 44 years.
