43 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ARMSTRONG, Rev. James B. James was born in Bassano, Alberta on January 12, 1923. He enlisted in the Air Force in October of 1942 and served with the Western Air Command in surveillance of the High Seas and Overseas during World War II. He was discharged in June of 1946. James became a united church minister and was Branch 237’s Padre for many years. He has been a member of Legion Branch 237 for thirty years. ARMSTRONG, Walter A. Walter was born in 1910. He was a career infantry soldier in the British Army. He served his country for over thirty years until his untimely death whilst on duty in England in 1961 at the age of 51. He served in the ranks for ten years and was commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment in February 1940. In 1949, he was transferred from an Emergency War Commission to a Quartermaster’s Commission and served the last twelve years as the Quartermaster of the 5th Battalion The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) located in Bolton Lancashire, England. During World War II he served in Europe and the Far East. In January 1956, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appointed Major Armstrong as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He was also awarded the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, the Burma Star, and the 1939-45 Star. Major Armstrong was a second generation British Army officer. ARMSTRONG, Robin Christopher “Robert” Robin was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England on December 20, 1951. In 1973, he enlisted in the British Army as a Rifleman in The Royal Green Jackets. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1974 as a Second Lieutenant in The Light Infantry. He completed several operational tours in Northern Ireland during the troubles and as a member of the United Nations Medal Cyprus. He was awarded the General Service Medal Northern Ireland and the United Nations Medal Cyprus. Robin also served in Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada and Zimbabwe. He graduated from the Army Staff College Camberley in 1985 and served as a staff officer at Headquarters Northern Ireland and the Defence Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Centre of the Ministry of Defence. Major Armstrong was discharged in 1990. He is a third generation military officer following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father who served in the British Army and his mother who served in the Canadian Army.
