49 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ASHTON, Harry Harry was born in Port Talbot, Wales on March 18, 1925 and came to Belleville, Ontario at the age of four with his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 in Kingston, Ontario and entered active service on June 12, 1943. Harry served in the RCNVR as a Stoker 1st Class on the HMCS Chambly (K116), running mainly from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland. After his discharge on October 19, 1945, he returned to the Bellville area and married his high school sweetheart, Ruth. He became a manager for Brewers Retail, a wonderful father and grandfather, a volunteer Boy Scout leader, a soccer coach, a member of Legion Branch 363 and called square dancing in Madoc, Ontario for more than 25 years. Harry passed away on March 22, 2003. ATKINSON (PALMER), Maxine Margaret Maxine was born in Tecumseh, Oklahoma on October 12, 1923. She enlisted in the CWAC on June 29, 1943. One of many American recruits to come to Canada, she trained in Ottawa and Kitchener, Ontario. She was stationed at the Army Headquarters in London, Ontario where she met her future husband Sgt Major Clarke Atkinson. She was discharged on September 4, 1945. After the war, Maxine became a charter member of Women’s Army, Navy and Air Force Branch 515 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 28 years and secretary for six before transferring to Branch 62 in Sarnia. She was an active member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corp in Windsor where a special engraved brick lays at Waterfront Park. Her CWAC uniform is displayed at Legion Branch 117 in Watford, Ontario. She was a mother to six, assisted her husband in his accounting practice, and volunteered at a number of organizations. Maxine passed away on June 11, 2010. ATKIN, Kenneth S. Kenneth was born in Inwood, Ontario on March 14, 1928. He enlisted in the Army in October 1944 and served with the No. 1 District in London, Ontario during World War II. He was discharged in October 1945. Kenneth passed away on August 21, 1980.
