51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ATKINSON, Ray Clarke Sgt. Major Ray Clarke Atkinson was born on July 21, 1916 in Northwood, Ontario and enlisted into the army on January 10, 1941. Clarke was educated and working in the accounting field in Sarnia. During the war he was stationed at the Army Headquarters at London, Ontario where he met his future wife Sgt. Maxine Palmer. He served with the Corps of Military Staff Clerks in London, Ontario during World War II. He was discharged on January 18, 1946. Clarke has been a member of the Legion for over fifty years and is honoured with the Meritorious Service Medal. He served as chairman of the finance committee and auditor of the Army Cadets’ Corps, Ladies Auxiliary at Sarnia and Petrolia, Wanna Branch 515 and with his church. Father of six, Clarke worked hard to provide for his family and volunteered his time to help others. ATYEO, Eric W. Eric was born in Sarnia, Ontario on July 26, 1947. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on August 28, 1968. Eric served in various detachments in Ontario, Manitoba and Northwest Territories. He was honourably discharged with the Long Service Medal on October 31, 1999 at the rank of Sergeant. Eric has been a member of Kirkland Lake Legion Branch 87. ATTWOOD, Harvey E. Harvey was born in Uxbridge, Ontario on March 27, 1922. He enlisted in the Army in Toronto on January 25, 1943. He was assigned to the Canadian Armoured Corps and began his training in Newmarket, Ontario during World War II. In September 1943, he arrived in the United Kingdom and trained in tanks. Harvey served with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment and landed on D-day in a duplex drive tank. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After his discharge on February 27, 1946, Harvey returned to marry and settle in Whitby, Ontario where he passed away on September 17, 2001. He was a member of Whitby Legion Branch 112 for 35 years.
