53 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND AUSTIN, Daniel C. Daniel was born in Carlyle, Ontario in August 1906. He enlisted in the Army in August 1942 and served with the Lord Strathcona Horse in Canada, England and Italy during World War II. After his discharge in January 1946, Daniel married Merle Henry and they owned service stations in Chesley and Nobel before finally returning to Chesley to retire. He was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for sixty years. Daniel passed away on August 3, 2006. AUSTIN, Ernest Ralph Ralph was born in Capreol, Ontario on April 18, 1920. He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and served in the Atlantic during World War II. He was torpedoed twice while serving in the North Atlantic. He was an excellent swimmer and saved several comrades. After his discharge in 1945, he trained as a chef and worked in Chilliwack, BC for years. Ralph passed away on September 19, 1971 in Chilliwack, BC. AUSTIN, Donald Donald was born in Capreol, Ontario on May 21, 1926. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with the Infantry in Canada during World War II. The war ended as Donald finished his basic training. He was very disappointed he could not go overseas to serve with his brothers. After being discharged in 1945, Don became a very successful Real Estate Broker and retired honourably. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in North Bay. Donald passed away on July 11, 2011.
