61 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BAILEY, George George was born on December 26, 1924 in Openshaw, Manchester, England. He joined the RAF in 1943 before he was drafted because he wanted to choose what force he would serve in. George spent the majority of his time as a wireless operator some of which was spent on the Lancaster Bomber during World War II. He served in England and was involved in the bombing of Berlin before the invasion of France by the Allies. George was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. He was discharged on August 1, 1947. After the war, he joined the Royal Navy and served there until 1955. In 1957, he immigrated to Canada with his wife and young son. He died on August 17, 2001. BAKER, Russell G. “Russ” Russell was born in Stratford, Ontario on April 23, 1923. He joined the Highland Light Infantry in September 1939 and after being in England for some time was transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment. Russell was in battle through Sicily and Italy where he was killed on December 24, 1943 and laid in his final resting place – in Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, Ortona, Italy. BAIRD, David E. Master Corporal David E. Baird was born on December 8, 1955 at Arnprior, Ontario. He enlisted in the military on May 30, 1974 and completed his basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. He was then posted to CFB Borden for ten weeks of trades training as “Mobile Support Equipment Operator”. Upon completion, he was transferred to Base Transport CFB Kingston, ON, where he gained further experience and training in all heavy equipment and speciality vehicles. In 1982, he was transferred to “4 Service Battalion” in Lahr, Germany for four years supporting NATO operations. Upon completion of his term of service, he was posted to CFB Ottawa, ON serving at Base Transport as VIP Driver as well as Special Purpose, Runway and Heavy Equipment Operator. He retired on May 29, 1994 as the Driver of the Minister of Defence. Since retirement, Mr. Baird has continued to use his knowledge and experience of heavy equipment in the construction, forestry and mining industries. David has been a member of Matachewan Legion Branch 386 for 15 years.
