87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOHNERT, Herbert Edward Herbert Edward Bonhert, son of Oscar and Amy Bohnert of Hanover, Ontario, was born on September 3, 1919. He joined the Canadian Military in November 1942 at the age of 23 years. He was stationed at Vimy Barracks, Kingston, Ontario with the Royal Canadian Corp of Signals. It was here that Herbert was injured on an Army motorcycle that precluded his hope of joining his two brothers Leo and Jerome fighting overseas in World War II. Herbert was promoted to Sergeant and was later stationed at Pat Bay Military Base, Victoria, British Columbia. His wife Irene moved from Walkerton, Ontario to be with Herbert in Victoria. Upon his Army discharge on February 16, 1946, Herbert and Irene moved back to Walkerton and raised six children. He was a member of Walkerton Legion Branch 102. Herbert passed away on November 1, 1988. BOON, Arthur Henry CWO Boon was born in Peterborough, England on November 12, 1924. He joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and trained in London, Kitchener, Camp Borden and Petawawa before going overseas in 1942. He was a tank gunner with the 19th Field (S.P.) Regiment when they landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He took part in all of the Canadian battles in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and was wounded twice. After his discharge, Arthur rejoined in 1956 and was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of 4RCR. He retired from the Armed Forces in 1981. He married Lois in 1956 and they had two sons. He is a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and President of RCR Association, Past President of the Perth Regiment Veteran’s Association and the 4RCR Officer’s Mess, and was a member of the 19th Field Regiment Association. Arthur was awarded the Canadian Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion of Honour Medal from France, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. BOLAND, Kenneth Gordon “Ken” Kenneth was born in North Bay, Ontario on August 15, 1922. He joined the Air Force in October 1942 in North Bay. He served with the 164 Heavy Transport Squadron in Canada during World War II. He reported to No. 2 Precision Rifle Squadron at No. 2 Manning Depot, Brandon, Manitoba. In February 1943, He was posted to Dauphin, MB, in the spring of 1943 he was posted to Initial Training School, Edmonton, Alberta for pilot training and was then posted to flying school at Davidson, Saskatchewan. Kenneth served in Toronto, Trenton, Ottawa, and Debert, Nova Scotia. He was promoted to Leading Aircraftsman. In the spring of 1944, Ken was assigned to 164 Heavy Transport Sqn at Moncton, NB. He was discharged in May 1946. After the war, Ken worked for the railway, owned a roller rink in North Bay, then in Pembroke and, lastly a fishing lodge and resort on Muskrat Lake. He was a member of Cobden Legion Branch 550 for 33 years.
