1 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND It is my distinct pleasure to extend warm greetings to all reading the fourth edition of the annual Military Service Recognition Book, compiled by the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. All those who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces, Commonwealth Forces, and Allied Forces have had a significant role throughout Canada’s history, shaping the country that we celebrate this year. Let us be deeply thankful for the sacrifices made by brave men and women, and be mindful of the visible and invisible injuries that all too often affect those who serve. I would like to commend the Ontario Command for your commitment in promoting remembrance, representing veterans and those in service, and serving the needs of your local communities. The year 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation and is a moment when all Canadians can engage in dialogue about who we are, and wish to be, as a people. The experience of your service will help point the direction forward. On behalf of all Ontarians, I thank all those who have served or continue to serve, and their dependants, in fighting for the rights and freedoms of Canadians. Elizabeth Dowdeswell

5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Comrades All... It is an honour and a privilege to bring greetings and thanks to all on behalf of Ontario Command. In May of 2013, the concept of a Military Service Recognition Book for Ontario Command was introduced at the Provincial Convention in Kingston, Ontario. Though confident the program would be a successful endeavour for Ontario Command, we were anxious of conveying that confidence to our delegates. The unanimous support from the floor was a pleasant surprise! The program to date an overwhelming success! The many submissions which followed have been amazing, a truly remarkable testament to your Ontario ‘Heroes’. Yes, some stories are brief, as sadly, were the lives of many of those heroes. The book is a tribute, to all of Ontario’s servicemen and servicewomen, of whom we are proud and to whom we are grateful for their contribution to our great country, and the freedoms, we enjoy. To some, the Military Service Recognition Book is a Book of Remembrance, providing a brief glimpse of the life of a Veteran now passed. For myself, as a Legionnaire, it is a Book of Promise. Our Promise to always Remember, to never let, the contribution of Canada’s Military to world peace and the Canadian way of life, be forgotten, nor taken for granted. As long as, Canada has a military, we have an obligation. Thank you to Comrade Ron Goebel for his commitment to the program, to our co-ordinators Comrades Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen, for their dedication and behind the scenes contribution, and to Fenety Marketing without whom we wouldn’t be publishing these memories. Finally, Special Thanks to you the members, and Families of our ‘Heroes’, for sharing these stories, your faith, participation and patience, has made this project a success, of which we can all be proud! In Comradeship, Sharon McKeown President The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command

Military Service Recognition Book 6 There are numerous benefits to joining our apprenticeship program including hands-on learning, meeting new people with similar interests, learning while earning and further discovering your interests in the trade. We hire apprentices from the ICI sector and local students interested in engaging in an apprenticeship program with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). At the Maintenance Construction and Skilled Trades Council, we assist students by helping them get started with the right affiliate. They then attend school three different times over the course of their program for eight weeks at a time, this is the in-class portion of the program. The whole program runs for approximately 5-6 years. Currently, we have 20 apprentices working at the TDSB. We are available to assist you in any further inquiries you may have. Maintenance, Construction & Skilled Trades Council 95 Shorting Road, Toronto, ON M1S 5B9 Tel: 416-406-0115 Fax: 416-406-3410 Email: jb@tradescouncil.com tradescouncil.com Proud to Support and Honour our Veterans The Maintenance and Construction Skilled Trades Council (MCSTC) represents traditional unions and 20 individual trades. Past divisions of the maintenance, construction, and facility management have achieved a significant amount of recognition from both the National and International. This is due to the fact that they attained ISO 9002 Registration and National Quality Institute awards. Furthermore, management was amongst the first public sector divisions to receive such recognition. As a result, we presently use this acknowledgment as a goal for the Council to reach and to surpass in the near future. The MCSTC has implemented many business practices which are not usually found in other public sector and unionized maintenance and construction departments by using creative business methods, staying competitive and having the ability to work within tight budgets. For instance, we portray the ability to confront and negotiate with private sector construction contractors in hopes of establishing construction projects at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and facilities. While the TDSB embraces fair wage policies that help ensure the TDSB attracts and retains skilled trades, especially in a boom construction times where private sector rates for skilled trades are exceeding the public sector, this is no rite of passage for TDSB skilled trades to perform all construction projects. If the TDSB skilled trades can offer the lowest bid against private sector contractors in tendered projects, we can be awarded the work. The bidding process also helps ensure the TDSB gets on-going competitive pricing for construction projects.

7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Our mission in The Royal Canadian Legion is to serve Veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance, and to serve our communities and our country. It is also our duty to perpetuate the memory and deeds of the fallen and to pass on to their families and descendants the traditions for which they stand. We do this in many ways, one of which is through various volumes of our Ontario Command Military Service Recognition Book program. This is an outstanding and successful book of Remembrance that will help identify and recognize many of our Veterans, present and past, within the Province of Ontario. We are proud to introduce you to our fourth publication within Ontario Command in which we recognize and remember our Veterans who have served, and are serving their country with pride and honour during times of conflict and peace. Let us remember all those that have gone before us, and those that are still with us including those that have come back broken either physically, mentally or both, during various conflicts in which our Canadian Forces have been engaged. When we introduced our program over four years ago, we were somewhat skeptical as to just how successful we might be with our program. Well that skepticism was certainly eliminated after the great success we enjoyed with the publication of our first book. And that success continues including this our fourth publication. Our success though would not have been possible if it were not for the combined support, cooperation and dedication of our Branches, Zones, Districts and Command in promoting our program on a regular basis to our membership, our Veterans, and to the families of Veterans throughout Ontario Command. So, my sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every-one involved for the dedication and assistance you give towards the success of our very important and special program. Keep up the good work! Some special thanks as well to our hard-working coordinators, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen. Their dedication towards our program has been outstanding. Special thanks as well for all of the support we have received from our staff at Ontario Command and our President, Sharon McKeown and Immediate Past President Brian Weaver. I also wish to thank our publishers Fenety Marketing for all of their support, cooperation and understanding in making our first four books so successful. It is only through your efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about our Veterans in communities across Ontario. 9 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE LADIES’ AUXILIARY PRESIDENT My fellow Comrades, What an honour I have been given to offer such a welcome to observe, share and enjoy the fourth edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. I would also like to extend congratulations on successfully publishing the fourth edition. This is an amazing way we can show appreciation to those who have served, who continue to serve or who have paid the supreme sacrifice. With the number of submissions that have been received for previous editions and continue to be submitted, demonstrates the need for future editions, of such a valued tool to preserve their memories. This is the one way their stories will live on within our families, communities and hopefully remain as a very important part of our history through their submission to this book and the prior editions. “We Will Remember Them” through the stories and biographies of their service, no matter what war or conflict they were involved in, we could never repay or honour them enough for their dedication and sacrifice they made. On behalf of Ontario Command Ladies’ Auxiliary, I extend a huge thank you, to the service men and women or their families for their submissions to make this publication a success. To all those who have had the hands on, in the coordination of this compilation, Chairman Comrade Ron Goebel, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen as well as the great Command Staff, we thank you. Of course, without the relationship with Fenety Marketing, this keepsake and record of Remembrance and History would be lost, “Lest we Forget”. Yours in Comradeship, Kim Adams Ladies’ Auxiliary Provincial President

Military Service Recognition Book 12 Life Decisions²,W¶V their Move, Respectfully By Monique Robichaud It was 1939, Allied forces were being called upon, our Canadians left as sons, daughters, friends and acquaintances and returned as veterans. Talking with David, Jim, Glen, Harold, Peter and Jean, I asked, "Why? Why go face-to-face with danger?" They all agreed, it was just something you had to do. Virtually all who enlisted had volunteered - following in footsteps, the cause or looking for adventure. Peter had been drafted to the Army, but quickly made the decision to join the Air Force, allowing him to finish his school year prior to training. +XQGUHGV RI WKRXVDQGV RI &DQDGLDQV EHWZHHQ WKH DJHV RI DQG HQOLVWHG WR MRLQ :HVWHUQ (XURSH¶V ZDU campaigns against Germany. For David, Jim, Glen, Harold, Peter and Jean, Scarborough is their community, where much of their lives have been spent as independent civilians in the workplace, keeping a home, enjoying marriage, family and friends² all the while advancing into retirement years. Some things were inevitable to change, but independence and community were essentials, non-negotiables. They simply wanted to remain in control of their own quality of life. Circumstances (loss or hospitalization of a spouse) was the primary reason for their lifestyle adjustments. While it is normal to feel concerned about the aging process, it was evident that age is simply a number. And to Peter James, RCAF (LAC) CIC (CPL) RCAF (F/C)
