107 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CRAWFORD, David Russel Russel was born in Albermarle Township, Bruce County, Ontario on April 13, 1898. He enlisted in the Army on April 7, 1916 at Wiarton, Ontario with the 160th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. during World War I. When the 160th was disbanded in England in early 1918, he was transferred to the 18th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. In his platoon, all but one other man and one officer were causalities of the severe fighting at Arras in September 1918. Russel was discharged on May 24, 1919. After the war, he farmed at Wolseley, east of Wiarton. Russel passed away on December 28, 1960. He is buried in Oxenden Cemetery. CRITCHLEY, Brian Cyril Brian was born on March 16, 1935 in Sheffield, England. He enlisted in the Army on April 5, 1956 with the York and Lancaster Regiment. He had a motorcycle accident while deployed at Bisley, England operating firing rangers for the Queen and family prizes. During training, he had the honour of receiving a trophy for soccer from Colonel James Carne V.C. of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was medically discharged on November 3, 1956. He has been a member of the Erin Legion Branch 442 for 32 years. CRERAR, Robert Hugh Robert was born in Elderslie, Ontario on May 21, 1919. Robert left his family in Elderslie Township and enlisted in the Canadian Army at London, Ontario on February 6, 1941 during World War II. From there he went to Royal Canadian Engineers at Petawawa for basic training before taking courses at Cornwall Technical School and Hamilton Trade School. The final phase of his training was at Barriefield for training in mechanical transport before graduating as a fullfledged motor mechanic. Robert was transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) and served in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe (France, Belgium and Holland). He was awarded the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was granted an Honourable discharge on September 26, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to his home and took over the family farm. He continued to volunteer to serve his community in various organizations and municipal government. He was a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144. Robert passed away on March 29, 2000.
