113 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CZORTEK, Bernard Bernard was born in Warlubie, Poland on July 31, 1926. At the age of fourteen, he was pulled out of School, in Poland and placed in “The Underground”. At the age of sixteen he was on “The Front Lines” fighting with “The Canadians” and “The British”. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 during World War II with the Polish Army Corps/2nd Pol. Comm. Motor Batt. C. 182/111. He served in Italy and Northern Africa. Bernard was one of the few, from his battalion, to survive “The Battle of Monte Cassino”. A battle of both heroism and sacrifice, this battle was won and their beloved Poland had been lost. Most combatants were not able to return to their homes, or homeland. Bernard chose to go to Canada, after the war, and worked on a farm in Crossfield, Alberta to pay for his passage over. Later he traveled to Toronto where he met, the love of his life, Margaret. When his Father was dying, he returned to Poland in 1960, still at great risk that he would not be allowed to return to Canada. Bernard has been a member of the Legion Branch 22 for 59 years. DAMM, Ralph Ralph was born on March 18, 1920 in Walkerton, Ontario. During World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at London, ON in 1940 as a skilled Radio Electronics Technician. There was actually a separate division for the Radio Electronics Technicians within the Royal Canadian Air Force. He completed his training at Manning Depot, Toronto before being shipped to London, England. While in England, he served with the Royal Air Force. Ralph was discharged in March 1941 at the rank of Leading Aircraftsman. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. DALEY, Romeo Romeo was born on May 21, 1932 in Capreol, Ontario. At eighteen, Romeo joined the Army in 1950, going west to join the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He turned nineteen on his way over to Korea where he served two tours during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. He was wounded and returned to Canada, and qualified as a paratrooper upon his return. In 1957, Romeo left the military and moved to Fort Eerie, where he worked for Canada Customs until his retirement in 1989 as a Customs Inspector. Romeo is a former member of Fort Erie Volunteer Fire Department #2, a founding member of the Underwater Recovery Unit, a supporter of Fort Erie Army Cadet Corp 2966, President of Korea Veterans Association Unit 15 Niagara. He is a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Association of Canada. In 2012, Romeo was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2016 he was Invested as a Knight of The Order of St. George. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 71 in Fort Erie for 46 years.
