119 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DEEVES, Albert Stuart “Red” Albert was born in Lucknow, Ontario on November 14, 1935. At an early age he moved to Hanover where he attended school. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and went to boot camp in St. Johns, Quebec. He was then posted to CFB Clinton for radar training then to 419 Squadron Edmonton. He served at CFB Borden, Uplands, and Germany. After returning to Canada he was sent to Florida for a three year period tracking missiles from Cape Canaveral. He came back to Canada and was sent to Chatham, NB. From there he went to the Navy in Halifax. He left the service and bought a small hotel in Neustadt, Ontario which he operated for several years before moving to Wiarton to sell real estate. He and his wife Rita raised three children and are now living in retirement in Hanover. He is now a member of Hanover Legion Branch 130 but has been a Legion member for 65 years. DENT, Ernest “Ernie” Ernie was injured in a training accident in England sometime in 1941, suffering a broken back and was in hospital in England for many months. He was assigned to Royal Engineers to help with electrical generating stations repairs during ongoing bombing through 1942 and 1943. Ernie was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers for D-Day invasion in 1944 and landed in France and fought through France, Belgium and Germany. He was injured in a jeep rollover and again suffered a broken back plus broken shoulders and many ribs and remained in hospital until his return to Canada sometime in 1946. Post War, Ernie started an electrical contracting business in Orono, Ontario and also became manager of the Orono Hydro Electric utility as well as its journeyman lineman despite having Veterans-Affairs-recognized disabilities from his back and shoulder injuries. With his wife, Mildred Dent, he fathered and raised four children in Orono until his death in 1968 from cancer. DELL, John Thomas “Buck” John was born in Kenabeek, Ontario on September 16, 1924 to a farming family. It was his dream at sixteen to follow his friends into service for his country. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1941 with the North Shore New Brunswick Regiment under the assumed name of John Thomas McGann and upon discovery of his age special permission had to be granted by his Mother to remain in Europe. He served in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, and North Atlantic. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France-Germany Star, the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a Life Member of the Legion Branch 576 and served as President. John passed away on January 1, 1982.
