127 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOUGHERTY, John H. “Jack” John was born in Chatham, Ontario on April 3, 1921. John attended Galt Aircraft School, in Galt, ON from October 2, 1939 to March 29, 1940. John enlisted in the Air Force on March 31, 1940 and served in World War II in Holland, Canada, France and Germany. He attended #1 Bombing and Gunnery School in Jarvis, ON and served with #7 B.R. Squadron RCAF W.A.C. Seal Cove, BC. He was a Prisoner of War in both Germany and Russia. John attended Applied Science course at Queen’s University in the spring and summer of 1946, for qualified student Veterans. He was hired in the fall of 1946 by Westclox Co. Peterborough in office-time and motion study department. John married Margaret (Jones) of Peterborough in February 1940. John then applied for a senior position at new RCA Victor radio and television components manufacturing plant in Renfrew, ON; where he was employed in Methods Dept. until the plant closed in November 1975. Marg and John have enjoyed 65 wonderful, peaceful years and raised three girls and two boys. He was a member of Legion Branch 148 Renfrew and at both Branch 28 Chatham and Branch 52 Peterborough. John died on December 23, 2017. DOWNEY, Donald R. Donald was born in Alliston, Ontario on February 26, 1924. Don joined the Air Force on April 1, 1943 and served in Dunville, ON and Yarmouth, NS in World War II. He was discharged on December 26, 1945. After the war, he graduated with a BA from the U of T. He worked on weather stations in the Canadian Arctic as a Meteorologist for the Federal Government Department of Transport for three years. He taught at Ryerson U. then high school in Dundalk, Alliston and Opeongo H.S. near Eganville, a total of 35 years. He married Margaret Hodgson, has four children, Jade, Shawn, Pamela, Hugh and eight grandchildren. He was a member of the Eganville Municipal Council for eight years. He has a record of 51 years of perfect attendance as a Rotarian and in 1988 became a Paul Harris Fellow. In 2013 he received the Senior Achievement Award from the Ontario Government in recognition of significant volunteer contribution to his community after the age of 65. He had been a member of the Eganville Legion Branch 353 for 52 years. DOUGLAS, Alexander Joseph Alexander was born on March 22, 1876 in Rama, Ontario. He was forty years old and married to Emma Douglas when he enlisted in the Army on May 1, 1916. He served with the 122nd Muskoka Battalion and was part of the Canada Forestry Depot with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. His service took him to England, Belgium and Continental Europe. He was discharged in December 1917 and returned home to Rama. Alexander passed away on November 27, 1938.
