129 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOWNEY, William Marshall Marshall was born on August 27, 1898 in Essa Township, Simcoe County-near Alliston, Ontario. Marshall enlisted in the Army on October 25, 1915 at the age of seventeen and served in World War I with the 99th Battalion 3rd Division. In the trenches of France he experienced battles of the Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, Amiens and Cambria. In October 1918, he was seriously wounded by a bomb and suffered a concussion, many shrapnel wounds and fractures. He spent one month in hospital in France, four more in England until released on February 19, 1919. In Alliston, he initiated an annual dinner for Vimy Veterans and always attended. He married Bernice Murphy, had four children, Donald, Marybelle, Joseph, Roseanne, and fourteen grandchildren. During World War II, he worked for the Inspection Board of the United Kingdom and Canada and was in charge of 200 Inspectors of rubber production for the Canadian Department of National Defence, from Quebec City to Winnipeg. After 1945 he continued working from Ottawa, retiring in 1960. He was a life-long Member of Alliston, Legion Branch until passing in 1976. DRIJBER, Sytske Sytske was born on January 29, 1920 in Oosterbierum, the Netherlands. She was a Dutch immigrant in 1926 as a child. She was a teacher in Ontario when she heard of the Allied Forces Section. She enlisted in the Army with the Allied Force Royal Netherlands Army (NEFIS) Intelligence in 1943. She trained with the USA WAACS and was sent to Australia. She trained for Dutch Colonies. In August of 1945 she went to JAVA into Independence War with Local Population. She was married and demobilized in 1946. She returned to Canada and remained in Ontario. She had six children and her husband passed away. Sytske is a member of the Legion Branch 197 Acton. DRIJBER, Oscar Louis Oscar was born in Indonesia on April 4, 1914. He enlisted in the Army in 1936 with the NEFIS (Intelligence). He served in Indonesia and Germany during World War II. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany but later escaped. He was a member of the Legion in Guelph. Oscar passed away in 1995.
