145 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FINLEY, Gordon Elmer Gordon was born in Long Point, New Brunswick on July 16, 1936. Gordon enlisted in the Army in 1953 with the #2 Depot in Fredericton, NB, and then was shipped to Calgary for the remainder of his service. He returned to NB and then moved to Southern Ontario, more specifically St. Thomas but moved to Airdrie, AB. and remained there for 33 years, retiring from Public Works (Calgary) and work part time, returning to St. Thomas, ON in 2011. Gordon and his wife Alma reside in St. Thomas. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 41 St. Thomas for over 59 years. FISCHER, Edgar John Edgar was born on August 10, 1887 in Chepstow. He enlisted in the Army on May 21, 1918 and was a soldier with the 48th Highlanders of Toronto, 15th Battalion 1st COR. He served in England, Rhine River, Charleroi, Cologne, Germany and Belgium during World War I. He embarked HMT Cassandra in Canada and arrived in England in June 1918. Overseas he experienced some weeks of trench warfare before the Germans began their pullback under increased pressure in 1918 all along the Western Front. The Regiment had just cleared the last German snipers from the French town of Charleroi when the Armistice was signed. Prior to service he was a locomotive fireman for the Grand Truck Railway. He married Margaret Clancy and owned a farm in Alberta until 1962. Edgar worked at building and repair into his eighties. Edgar passed away on March 11, 1982. FIRTH, William George William was born in Kingston, Ontario on November 22, 1923. He enlisted in the Army in July 1940 and served with the Dufferin & Haldimand Rifles and The Toronto Scottish Regiment in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Germany during World War II. William was wounded in the leg and neck in France in October 1944. He suffered from tuberculosis when he was discharged in 1946 and returned home to Brantford, Ontario. He received six service medals during the war. He married Catherine (Groves) in 1946 and had five children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He became an advocate for his fellow Veterans after the war and received the Legion Meritorious Service Medal in 1989. William owned and operated a used car lot after the war and retired from Hussmann’s Refrigeration in 1986. He returned to Holland in 1985 for a Liberation reunion. He became a Life-Member of Legion Branch 90 in Brantford and received the 75th Anniversary Commemorative Pin in 2015. William passed away on March 1, 2018. He was posthumously awarded the Memorial Cross by the Government of Canada.
