147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FLEMING, William William was born on August 19, 1896, son of Alfred and Emily Fleming of Priory Club, Guelph, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army during World War I and was attached to the Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade, Division: 1st. Private William Fleming was killed in service on September 3, 1918 and is commemorated on page 587 of the First World War Book of Remembrance and is buried at Vis-en-Artois, British Cemetery, Haucourt, Pas de Calais, France. FORD, Arthur Russell “Art” Arthur was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1922. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 with the 16th/43rd Battery R.C.A. C.A.S.F. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. He did not talk much about the war or his service. However while serving as a “gunner”, he was ordered to test fire his machine gun across a field of wheat. He explained that the tracers he was to use could cause the field to catch fire. Again ordered to fire, he did so and the field caught on fire. After the war, Art married Joan and both became Life Members of the Acton Branch 197 of the Legion. Both served as Sergeant-at-Arms and took great pride in carrying flags as members of the colour party during Remembrance Day ceremonies. On Art’s Discharge Certificate, it states he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Art also received a medal representing The 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. Upon returning to Acton, he received a gold ring with the inscription “Acton 1939-45”. Art passed away in 2013. FLYNN, Jerry Hope Laurice Wilfred Jerry was born on November 21, 1898, son of John Irwin and Lilly Hilliard Flynn of Waterloo, Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force and was attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force, Division: 32 Squadron. Jerry died on September 3, 1918 and is commemorated on page 587 of the First World War Book of Remembrance and is buried at Sin-le-noble Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.
