157 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GASCOIGNE, Kevin C. Kevin was born in Hastings, Victoria, Australia on April 24, 1948. He enlisted into the Royal Australian Navy on July 5, 1964, as a Junior Recruit. On completion of recruit training, he was categorized in Mechanical Engineering, he then re-categorized to Underwater Weapons, later volunteered for Physical Training Instructor. Kevin completed courses in CABA (diving), Combat Survival, Management, VABA Referee and Judge, RLSS Examiner and many more. He was a member of RAN Gymnastic Display Team which performed at the Military Tattoo in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia in 1977. He served in various Types/Classes of RAN Ships throughout his career. Kevin was awarded a Flag Officer’s Commendation for services in HMAS “Lonsdale”, Australia Active Service Medal (Vietnam), Vietnam Logistic Support Medal, Aust Service Medal (FESR), Defence Force Service Medal with 1 Clasp, National Medal, Australia Defence Medal and Returned from Active Service Badge. Kevin retired from the RAN on October 26, 1984. Kevin has resided in Stoney Creek, Ontario since he immigrated to Canada in 1995. He has been a member of the Stoney Creek Legion, Battlefield Branch 622 for more than twenty years. GILBERT, Morley Rex Morley was born to Wilmot and Addie Gilbert on September 5, 1893 just outside Napanee, Ontario in South Fredericksburg, Lennox and Addington. He enlisted in the Army on January 20, 1916 in Kingston, Ontario with the 146th Battalion of the CEF at the age of 22 during World War I. On April 9, 1917 Morley took part in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and fought with the 4th CMR to achieve their objective in mid-afternoon. In October, the 4th CMR moved from Vimy Ridge to Flanders where he fought in the 2nd Battle of Passchendaele on October 28. The 4th CMR suffered many gas attacks during that time. Morley was with the Battalion on August 25, 1918 when he was wounded. He was honourably discharged on March 28, 1919 in Kingston and awarded the War Service Badge – Army Class A. He re-enlisted on August 16, 1940 for World War II with the 3rd Battalion Coy, Veteran Guard of Canada (AF). He was a member of the Legion Branch 137 Napanee. Morley passed away on November 16, 1974. GAYLER, Keith Granville Keith was born in Schellville, Quebec on May 21, 1924. He enlisted in the Army on September 11, 1942 in Parry Sound, Ontario with the Toronto Scottish Regiment as a Private MMG No. 1 Gunner. He served in France and Holland during World War II. He was shipped overseas to France where on May 22, 1943 he sustained an injury to his left leg and ear drum due to mortar fire. He returned to duty on August 15, 1944. Three of his brothers also served overseas in different regiments with one making the ultimate sacrifice. Keith earned $46.50 a month. Upon his discharge, he returned to Thedford, ON where he married his sweetheart, Margaret Fleming on November 10, 1945. They had three children. Keith worked as an electrician, plumber and carpenter up until his retirement. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 278 Thedford and for sixty years and is a Life Member.
