159 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILMORE, Robert Hugh “Bob” Robert was born in 1925 in Welland. Bob joined the Navy in June 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was sent to Cornwallis but was soon assigned to the HMCS Timmins, a flower class corvette. He spent most of his time patrolling the North Atlantic and was discharged in 1945. Bob joined the RCAF in 1951 and served in different bases across Canada as a fitter, rigger on helicopters. He retired in 1975 while stationed in Trenton, Ontario. Bob is a 71 year Legion member who never misses a Remembrance Day. GOEBEL, Albert Christian Albert was born in Neudorf, Saskatchewan on May 11, 1921 to Philip and Emily Goebel. He has two brother and three sisters. On January 16, 1942 he enlisted in the R.C.A.S.C. After basic training which included a truck driving and motorcycle course he was sent to England for one year before being sent to Europe. His unit served through France, Holland, Belgium and Germany during World War II. He spent the war years transporting troops, supplies and even bombs to the front lines. His pay was $1.30 a day with an extra ten cents per day as Lance Corporal. After taking a driver mechanics test he was given a .35 cents a day raise in pay. He was discharged in March 1946. Albert never had an accident while driving during the war and he never had to fire a rifle. He came home on the ship “Queen Elizabeth” on rough seas. He settled in Kitchener, ON where he met Louise Bennett (1990) whom he married in 1947. He worked at Dominion Rubber for 44 years while they raised a family of four children. He had been a Legion member at Branch 530 for 48 years and carried the Canadian Flag on parade until he was 92. GIVEN, Ray W. Ray was born in East Oxford Township, Ontario on December 23, 1915. He served as an Army Private and enrolled in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps at Camp Borden, Ontario on July 1, 1940. He served overseas and was discharged on June 20, 1945. Ray was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was employed with the City of Brantford, Ontario as an employment officer for 32 years. Ray was a member of Telephone City Branch 90 of The Royal Canadian Legion and advocated for Veteran’s services as the Veterans Service Officer for the Branch. Ray passed away on March 15, 1993.
