177 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HANDY, William Bertrand William was born in Toronto in 1925 to parents from the Blenheim, Ontario area. In June 1942, he enlisted in the RCAF and trained in Toronto and St. Jean, QC during World War II. He graduated as an Air Navigator and received the rank of Flying Officer. In May 1943, he was posted overseas with No. 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit. He was aboard a Halifax Bomber No. B149 when it crash landed after completing its mission. The starboard outer propeller was feathered when it struck a telegraph pylon during the landing approach at Crowil, Lincolnshire, England. The bomb aimer and two other crew members including F.O. Handy were killed. The date was March 19, 1944, one year to the day that William Handy received his wings. He was 19 years old and is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. His father and mother lost their only son. Two of his uncles, brothers of his Mom were also killed one week apart in World War I. HARLING, David Theodore David was born in 1923 in Cochrane, Ontario. He enlisted in his home town of North Bay on October 29, 1942 during World War II. He was posted overseas to the RCRs as reinforcements on March 3, 1943 and arrived in England on March 17. He served with the RCRs in Sicily and Italy and was wounded on December 17, 1943 in the action in ‘The Gully’ leading up to Ortona. He was evacuated from Italy on January 29, 1944 and arrived in the UK on February 4, 1944. David was transferred to Canada at the end of March 1944 and discharged in Toronto as medically unit for further duty on May 26, 1944. In civilian life he was an executive with Hoar Transport in Toronto and eventually retired to the Apsley area. He passed away in 1982 while visiting with family in North Bay. David is interred in Terrace Lawn Cemetery, North Bay. HANSON, Everette Thomas Everette was born in Scotia, Ontario on January 15, 1912. He enlisted in the Army on February 21, 1945 and served during World War II with the Regular Force in Canada. He was discharged in 1945. He was a member of Legion Branch 386 for twenty years. Everette passed away on May 27, 1974.
