179 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARPER, Fred Thomas Fred was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 4, 1921. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 in Britain. He served in Canada and England during World War II. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal and the War Medal. Fred volunteered to go to Japan after England but the Atomic Bombs changed that plan – he returned home instead. He was discharged in 1945. Fred returned to his job at Bell Canada and he and his wife Lauretta bought a triplex Apartment building in Hamilton. In 1950, they built their home on Upper Paradise in Hamilton. He retired from Bell after over thirty years and became a realtor. Fred passed away on December 21, 1999. HARRISON, Charles Frank Charles was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 8, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on November 21, 1941 with the Cameron’s Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps/Canadian Infantry Corps during World War II. He was wounded in France on August 4, 1944. He served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe and was discharged on March 19, 1946. Charles was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After returning to Canada he was an Engineer with the Canadian National Railway. He was a member of the Legion Branch 101 for 67 years. Charles passed away on October 4, 2013. HARPER, Sparling Sparling was born in Jeffrey, Alberta on March 26, 1919. He entered active militia of Canada on July 31, 1940 during World War II with the Brockville Rifles Canada. At the time of enlistment, Sparling called Brockville his home. His services included T.O.S to “B” Coy Tfd to Hq boy #4 Pier allotted No C-A36171. His #2 course C.A(R)TC #80. He was honourably discharged on March 5, 1941 due to being medically unfit because of double hernia. Sparling is a member of the Legion Branch 208 in Wiarton.
