189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HENDERSON, Donald Frederick “Don” Don was born in Pickering on June 8, 1934. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on January 15, 1952 and trained in Wainwright, Alberta. He served in Korea with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry. He was discharged on July 6, 1955 and awarded the Canadian Korea Medal and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112 Whitby and Life Member of the Korean Veterans Association of Canada Unit 11 Oshawa. Don passed away on June 12, 2010. HEWTON, Arthur Henry Arthur was born in Ornsby, Ontario on November 16, 1910 to John and Catherine Hewton. He had two sisters and seven brothers. He married Jean Rose on September 28, 1935 and had six children. He worked for Bell Canada as a linesman before enlisting in The Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment on September 9, 1939 later transferring to the Royal Canadian Artillery where he served as a Bombardier. He trained in Aldershot, England and served as a Corporal in Continental Europe during World War II. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal 19391945. He was discharged on June 16, 1945; he joined the Brighton, Ontario Legion where he was a member for forty years. Arthur passed away in 1985 and is buried at Carrying Place, Ontario. HEWARD, James James was born on July 20, 1923 in Cardiff, Wales. He enlisted in the Navy on April 8, 1942 and served during World War II in the Mediterranean Sea on ships HMS Osprey, Nemesis, Circe and Nimrod. James served as a submarine detector on numerous minesweepers in the Mediterranean Sea for His Majesty’s Royal Navy. He received a DSM (Distinguished Service Medal) from King George VI on December 4, 1943. Being a strong swimmer, he volunteered to dive with an officer into the water to free a mine from the ship, thus saving the ship and its crew from imminent danger. In April 1949, he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve and was discharged in August 1952 to immigrate to Canada where he met his wife, raised his son and travelled all over Canada and USA as a long distance truck driver for 35 years. He was a member of the Brooklin Legion Branch 152 for ten years. James passed away on January 6, 2011.
