193 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HICKEY, John William John was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on May 20, 1930. He enlisted in the Army on January 27, 1950 and served with the Royal Canadian Signal Corp as Radio Tech. While in school, he did guard duty often. He served in Canada and Germany during Peacetime. He was discharged on February 14, 1953. After his service, he continued his radio work. John has been a member of Legion Branch 561 for thirty years. HIGGINS, James Alexander James was born in Belfast, Ireland on July 8, 1914. He enlisted in the Army during World War II with the 13th Anti-Tank Bty RCA. He served in England, France and Germany and was discharged on September 17, 1945. He was a Life Member of the Legion Branch 197. James passed away in 1992. HIGGINBOTTOM, Edward John “Ted” Edward was born in Aylmer, Ontario on February 17, 1920. He enlisted in the Army during World War II in September 1939 with the 1st Special Service Force (Devil’s Brigade), 6th Company, 2nd Battalion and 1st Regiment. He served in Canada, US, Pacific Theatre (Kiska), Africa and Italy. While Edward was serving in Italy, he was severely wounded twice. The first time in December 1943 and he recovered. The second time, he was injured from the waist down by flying shrapnel in May 1943, during the legendary Devil’s Brigade assault upon a mountain fortress at Monte La Defensa. He was never to walk again. He was sent to a British Hospital and returned to Canada in September 1944 to convalesce at Sunnybrook Hospital to Lyndhurst Lodge. He was discharged in December 1944 and received the 1939-1945 Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal, the King George Medal, Queen Elizabeth Medal and Congressional Gold Medal. He became a Charter member and Board of Directors of the Canadian Paraplegic Association. He returned to St. Thomas in 1946 and was employed by Anderson’s Department Store. Edward passed away in August 1986 and was a member of the Legion Branch 41 Col. Talbot.
