197 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HINDMAN, William Rodrick “Bill” Bill was born in Kepple Township just outside of Owen Sound on April 14, 1916 to William J. and Effie (McEachnie) Hindman. On March 11, 1942 at the age of 26, Bill joined the war effort during World War II and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Artillery 92nd Edmonton Battery (First Canadian Division). After his basic Infantry training, Bill was sent to the U.K. for further training and then for two years was a dispatch rider in the Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. He was discharged on October 30, 1945. William was awarded the Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 Victory Star. After the war, Bill returned to the place of his birth and worked the farm. After selling the farm Bill became a school bus driver. On November 12, 2000 at the age of 84, Bill died of Leukemia and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. HISEY, John Harold John was born in Newmarket, Ontario on April 13, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on October 28, 1942 with the 2nd Canadian Medium Regiment. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe during World War II. He did not talk much about his experiences in the Army but said he had many close calls. Being so tall at 6’6” he said he had to learn to dig fast and dig deep. When he came home after being discharged on January 19, 1945 he returned to Office Speciality as a spot welder. He worked there until his retirement at 65. He was a member of the Legion Milton Wesley Branch 426 for 55 years. John passed away on October 18, 2002. HINKSON, James Edward James was born in Oshawa, Ontario on April 22, 1890. He enlisted in the Army on February 23, 1916. He served in France during World War I. He was discharged on February 27, 1919 and received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was a member of the Legion Branch 43 and had been for 35 years. James passed away in 1969.
