29 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ALLEN, John R. John was born in England on June 28, 1935. As a youth he spent the war years in Portsmouth Leicester, where his home was destroyed in bombing. In Newcastle, he trained as a pilot in Air Cadets. He joined the Royal Navy in 1951, and then transferred to Fleet Air Arm. He served in Europe, Asia and Near East on HMS Ark Royal, HMS Eagle, HMS Victorious and HMS Hermes during the Korean War. He served at various Naval Air Stations worldwide 750, 803 and 892 Naval Squadrons. He was on Loan Service to British military of Aviation for aircraft and weapon Research. He was discharged in 1961. He married WRNS Elizabeth McLachlan. John received an Engineering Degree from Bristol University. On release from FAA, he worked for British Airways. They immigrated to Canada and he was employed at various locations with Canadian Pacific Airlines. He also commissioned with Canadian Air Reserve with 400 Squadron. John was employed as an Engineer with Ontario Hydro Electric at various locations across Ontario and on loan service assisting Foreign Utilities until retirement. He was a Volunteer Tour Guide with Canadian Warplanes Heritage Museum. He first joined the Legion Branch 82 and transferred to the Branch 60 Burlington in 2007. APPS, Gerald Carl Gerald was born on March 28, 1937 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He served as a Peacekeeper in the Army from November 29, 1954 to September 30, 1969 with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. Gerald served in Soest Germany with NATO. He is a member of the Legion Branch 43 Oshawa. His service medals include Canadian Forces’ Decoration and NATO with Bar. AMERY, George Edwin George was born in East Grinstead, Sussex, England on June 13, 1891. In 1912, at the age of twenty, George emigrated from England where he had worked as a gardener for three years. In Canada, he went to Fenwick in Pelham Township, Welland County, Ontario. By 1917, he was a clerk living in nearby Ridgeville. George enlisted in the Army on May 21, 1917. He served with the Welland Canal Force, for almost two years before enlisting in the Canadian Mounted Rifles in Hamilton. He was later transferred to the 102nd Battalion. After the war, he worked as a nurseryman at Ridgeville. In 1924, he moved to Chesley, Ontario where his brother Thomas built and operated a greenhouse for many years. He spent his last years in Westminster Hospital in London, Ontario before passing away on March 10, 1963. George was a member of the Legion Chesley Branch 144.
