35 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ATKINS, Frederick Arthur Frederick was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario on April 4, 1920 to Alfred T. and Lilian Atkins. He enlisted in the Army and served as a Private with the Gray and Simcoe Foresters Royal Canadian Armoured Corps during World War II. Frederick was hit by a car while returning to duty on September 5, 1940 and passed away. BAKER, Bernard Roy “Bunny” Bernard was born in Norwich, England on July 27, 1923. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II in 1940. He commenced fly training in Tiger Moths. In 1941, he was posted to Canada. His fly training was completed in 1942 on Tiger Moths and Oxfords. He was awarded RAF Wings and Commission. The next step he became an Instructor at School in Cornells and Cranes. He qualified as an Instructor flying Oxfords and instructed in Navigation, including Staff pilot duties, in Ansons. After posting back to the UK, he went into operational training in Wellingtons; Conversion Unit and Operational Squadrons - #575 and #50 Lancasters; then to Transport Command on Dakotas. His release came in 1946. He enrolled and commissioned RCAF with refresher Flying Training plan. He was Chipmunks from 1955 to 1957 and had DOT Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence Instructor Category. In 1977 he retired from the Air Cadets Squadron 715 Burlington after eleven and a half years. He was employed by Firestone Canada from 1948 until 1963. Bernard passed away on July 25, 1986. He was a member of Burlington Legion Branch 60. ATKINSON, John W. “Jack” Jack was born on January 5, 1920 in Durham, Ontario. He joined the Army on May 5, 1942 and served in the United Kingdom and Central Mediterranean area. He received the Italy Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal, King George VI Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Jack was discharged from the Army on January 28, 1946. He returned to Durham where he raised a family of seven children. He became the town’s milkman until his death on October 29, 1962. He was a member of Legion Branch 308 in Durham, ON for fifteen years.
