39 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARFOOT, Stewart Leslie Stewart was born on July 10, 1923 in Sarawak Township, Grey County, Ontario. He enlisted in the Merchant Navy in 1940. He was an engineer and served out of the Manning Pool in Montreal during World War II. Some of the ships he sailed on were SS Bayton in 1941; SS Northton in 1942; SS Fairlane in 1943; SS La Fontaine Park in 1943-44; SS Lake Chelan in 1944; SS Temagami Park in 1944-45 and SS Saperton Park in 1946. Besides his sailing duties he was also the ship’s barber. He was discharged in August 1946. After the war he purchased a stake truck and trucked livestock to Toronto, returning with feed for Master Feeds in Owen Sound. He sold the truck to Laverne Sprung which was the first truck purchased by Sprung Transport Company. He then farmed 500 acres in Elderslie Township and married Doreen Peters (a Bell Canada employee) in January 1951. They had three sons and four daughters. At the age of eighty he retired and moved to Tara. Stewart passed away on April 17, 2006. He was a 41 year member of the Legion. BARTLETT, George Alfred “Alf” Alf was born in Montreal on September 27, 1916 and enlisted in the 17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars on February 25, 1941. The 17th was a Reconnaissance Regiment and operated in close conjunction with the Brigades of the 3rd Division. They probed enemy positions, directed beach traffic and kept the Divisional Commanders informed on each Brigades progress. On D-Day, the 17th Hussars landed on Juno Beach at 0630 hours and operated in two specialized groups: Contact Detachments probing for the enemy and Beach Groups leading the landing forces off the beach. From D-Day until July 31, the 17th Hussars Reconnaissance Detachments fought side by side with the Battalions of the 3rd Division. Alf was a part of the following major battles: D Day on Juno, The Battle of Caen, The Normandy Campaign, The Battle of the Scheldt and the Liberation of Holland. He was discharged on December 20, 1945. Alf passed away on November 12, 2007. He was a member of the Legion Branch 24/106 Montreal for 48 years. BARKER, Martin John “Jack” Martin was born on July 11, 1901 in Brighton, England. He enlisted in the Army in 1929 and served during World War II with the Royal Canadian Ontario Regiment. He served in Holland, Sicily, Italy and Germany. In 1919, he was a member of Royal Canadian Dragoons equestrian team-Musical Ride. In 1943 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire presented by the Queen. In 1937, he was selected to represent Oshawa to attend Coronation of King George VI as a member of Canadian Contingent. He was discharged on May 8, 1945. Upon returning to Oshawa he worked as a Chief of Plant Protection General Motors for 36 years. Mr. and Mrs. Barker had one daughter Donna (Barker) Stell. Martin passed away on June 30, 1993.
