43 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BELL, Neil Linton Neil was born in Toronto on January 16, 1923 and was adopted by missionaries. He was raised in China until he was sixteen years old. The family returned to Canada and Neil enlisted in the Army in 1942 with the 23rd Field Regiment SPRCA. He was sent overseas and stationed in Europe. He suffered cordite burns on his hands and face and was treated at Basingstoke burn hospital in England. While there, an experimental treatment was used resulting in healing with no visible scars. Following discharge on February 13, 1946, he returned to Toronto and began working for Robert Simpson Eastern division. Neil met his wife Jean and they married a year after his discharge and raised four children. Employed with Simpsons for 27 years in Toronto, Neil transferred to Montreal with the company and worked a further seven years until his retirement. He moved to Madoc, Ontario where he became a ‘Gentleman Farmer’ while working part time as a machine operator for the Madoc Township roads maintenance department. Neil has been a member of Madoc Legion Branch 363 for fifteen years. BENNETT, James Murray James was born in Woodhouse Township, Ontario on March 20, 1941. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force in London, Ontario on August 10, 1960. After completing his basic training at CFB St Jean Quebec, he proceeded to Canadian Forces Base Borden for his firefighter training. Jim’s first posting was CFB Downsview, Ontario and later went to serve with NATO at Marville, France as part of 1 Fighter Wing for four years. On returning to Canada, Jim also served at CFB Trenton, Ontario. Jim was discharged on August 9, 1970 at the rank of Corporal after having completed ten years of service. Due to his experience, he was immediately hired after his discharge by the London Fire Department and he served as a firefighter for thirty years. BELROSE, Gordon Elroy Gordon was born in 1921 in Tobermory, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army with the Perth Regiment and served in Italy during World War II. Private Gordon Elroy Belrose was killed in action on February 5, 1944 in Italy. He is buried in the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery in Ortona, Italy.
