55 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOON, Arthur William Arthur was born in Peterborough, England on April 24, 1887. He joined the Army on July 17, 1915. He served with the 3rd Battalion. Toronto Regiment in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Germany during World War I. He fought at Vimy Ridge, was wounded on October 8, 1916 and served four years in World War I. He re-enlisted for World War II with the Veterans Guard of Canada and served in Canada four years for a second time. He also served with the Perth Regiment Militia between 1920 and 1936. He was a member of the Legion Branch 8 Stratford for 25 years. Arthur passed away on September 2, 1951. BORCHARDT, Hugo Hysert Hugo was born in Sarina, Ontario on September 25, 1913. He enlisted in the RCAF and served in World War II in the European Theatre of Operation. Hugo was posted to 90 Squadron, RAF in Tuddenham in the South of England as the Bomb Aimer. He and his crew of six were lost on operations during the night of July 20, 1944 while on a nighttime bombing mission to the oil refineries in Homberg, Germany. During the early hours of July 21, 1944, Lancaster LM183 was brought down over Boxtel in the Netherlands by Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer, the highest scorning night fighter ace of World War II. WP-L for “Love” was subsequently recognized as Hauptmann Schnaufer’s 85th Victory. Pilot Officer Borchardt and five of his aircrew are interred in the Eindhoven (Woensel) Cemetery in the Netherlands with the following inscription “He Did What He Could” on his headstone. BOON, John S. John was born in Peterborough, England on September 26, 1880. He enlisted in the Army on July 10, 1915 with the 3rd Battalion the Toronto Regiment. He served in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Germany during World War I. He was wounded on September 9, 1916, fought at Vimy Ridge and returned to England in 1934. He was discharged on March 20, 1919. John died on December 1, 1935 in Peterborough, England.
