77 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BUNN, Harold “Howie” Harold was born in Weston, Ontario on November 15, 1922. He enlisted in the Navy on June 20, 1941. Howie was on the HMCS Ville de Quebec when it rammed and sank U-Boat 224 off the coast of Algeria on January 13, 1943. Then he was on the HMCS Chebogue when it was torpedoed on October 4, 1944 while on escort duty on the North Atlantic. He received many medals and was a long-time member of the Canadian Legion Branch 15 Brampton. Howie married Phyllis who was from Weston, they went to school together. Phyllis was also in the war in the RCAF Women’s Division. He became an OPP Officer. Howie passed away on April 6, 1996. BUNN, William Henry William was born in Birmingham, England on March 5, 1891. Private Bunn was one of the Wingham Boys who got action early in the war. He enlisted with the 33rd Battalion on February 1, 1915. He went to France with the 6th Canadian Corps and saw some pretty strenuous work in his capacity as Stretcher Bearer, being slightly gassed on several occasions. In September 1918, he was badly wounded in the thigh by shrapnel. He has been confined to hospital in England. William was discharged on August 8, 1919. He was blessed with eight boys and two girls. He worked at Moffats with some of his children. He was a member of Westmount Army and Navy Club for 25 years. William died on November 7, 1953. BUNN, Phyllis E. J. Phyllis was born in Weston, Ontario on April 10, 1924. She enlisted in the Air Force in 1943 – Women’s Division during World War II. She took basic training at Rockcliffe, Ottawa. Then she took a photography course at Lower Rockcliffe. Upon graduation she was sent to #1B and G’s Bombing and Gunnery School. She did class photos, panoramas, funerals, parades, baseball games, accidents, etc. Upon becoming a Corporal she started flying in Bolingbroke, Ancons and Harvards taking bombing scores, etc. From there she went to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia until the duration of war. She was discharged in 1945. Phyllis has been a member of the Legion Branch 197 Acton, Ontario for eleven years.
