79 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURGESS, Earl Edward Earl was born on January 11, 1894 in Southampton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in February 1916 with the 180th Owen Sound Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in the trenches in Europe during World War I. He then became a Prisoner of War Camp Guard in Northern Ontario in World War II. Earl was discharged in 1918. In 1929, he was a founding charter member of RCL Branch 155 in Southampton, Ontario. Following his service, he retired to a farm near Wiarton, Ontario with his family until his death on March 5, 1985. BURNSIDE, Walter C. Walter was born in July 26, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario. He served in the Army from February 4, 1944 to October 25, 1946 with the 12th Canadian Field Cash Office and 85 Bridge Co. 1302. Walter served in Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. His father was a padre in World War I. He had two uncles serving as well, one killed overseas. Once Walter returned home he worked odd jobs and then worked for the Toronto Transit Commission for 32 years before retiring in 1988. BURLEY, Leslie M. Leslie was born in Bruces Mines, Ontario on July 30, 1918. He enlisted in the Army on March 21, 1941 in Toronto, ON. He served with the 17th Field Regiment, 76th Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery GNR. (L/Bdr). He served in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Mediterranean Area during World War II. Leslie was awarded seven medals: the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He also was at Dieppe. Leslie passed away on December 12, 1979.
