81 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURROWS, Herbert Edward Herbert was born on September 8, 1921 in Euclid, Ohio. He served in the Army during World War II from October 1939 to June 1946 with the Canadian Corp of Engineers as a sapper. He spent time at different transfer centers in Ontario for various internees, Prisoners of War and civilians. He spent the majority of time at Prisoner of War Camp 23, Monteith, Ontario, which was the largest camp in Eastern Canada with approximately 4000 prisoners of war with 800 guards and staff. He returned home to Port Credit, Ontario, raised his family and passed away on February 4, 1989. BUTLER, Ellis Ellis was born on October 20, 1912 in Arkona, Ontario. In accordance with the National Resources Mobilization Act of 1940, Ellis required to join the Canadian Army (Active) on October 26, 1942 at London, Ontario. After his training at Camp Ipperwash and Halifax, NS he was shipped off to England in January 1945. Ellis served with the Royal Canadian Artillery starting with the 36th Coast Battery and then went on to serve with 16 Sydney Coast Regiment and the 1st Battalion Irish Fusiliers (VR) (CA). His theatres of operation were in Northwestern Europe and England. His medals include the France and Germany Star and the War Medal. Ellis was honourably discharged on February 21, 1946 at the rank of Gunner. BUTLER, Edgar Dawson Edgar was born in Arkona, Ontario on May 9, 1918. During World War II, he enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) on August 18, 1941 at #2 District Depot Toronto. After his initial and trades training he was transferred to C Company of the Queen’s Own Rifles as a Rifleman. Edgar served in Canada, England and France. Unfortunately Edgar was killed in action on June 6, 1944 in the invasion of Normandy beach in France. He is buried at Beny-Sur-Mer Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in France. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945.
