105 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CARRUTH, Ronald J. Ronald was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 15, 1931. He enlisted in the Army on October 18, 1949 with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He served with the RCASC, Logistics and Administration Branch in Canada, Korea, Indochina, Yugoslavia, UNEF and Ghana. Ronald continued as a civilian for an additional ten years after serving 35 years in uniform. He was discharged on February 19, 1985. CARTER, George Alfred George was born in Glidden, Saskatchewan on June 5, 1918. He enlisted in the Army on November 25, 1940 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Continental Europe during World War II. He attained the rank of Sergeant in GGHC Armoured Corp, a Squadron “recon” group. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal and 125th Anniversary Confederation Medal. He was discharged on January 24, 1946. He worked as a stationary engineer at Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co. in Kapuskasing. George passed away on September 29, 2006. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 85 Kapuskasing. CARTER, Fred Moncreiff Fred was born on August 18, 1917 in Whitchurch, Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force on September 5, 1941. Flying Officer Fred Moncreiff Carter was killed in action on August 31, 1943 while serving with the 622nd Squadron. Fred was the Navigator on a Stirling bomber in a raid on Berlin, the plane was shot down near Wollerhausen, Germany by Hauptman Wilhelm Telg who was flying a ME110 Night Fighter. Fred’s body was recovered from the wreckage and buried in Hanover War Cemetery. He lived in Richmond Hill and is commemorated on the local cenotaph as well as a memorial plaque in Richmond Hill’s St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
