107 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CASTLEMAN, Thomas H. Thomas was born on September 21, 1881 in Leicester, England. Thomas served five years in the Regular British Army and when he was discharged in 1910 he moved to Canada working at various jobs throughout Western Canada. During this time he met his future wife Cecilia Whiteford and they were married in 1914. While living in Winnipeg in 1916, Thomas joined the Canadian Army. Thomas left for England in September 1916 as part of the 108th Overseas Battalion. In late 1917, after training in England for over a year, Thomas landed in France as part of the 43rd Cameron Highlanders. In August 1918, Thomas was wounded twice and spent the next six months recuperating. He was discharged in Kingston, Ontario in February 1919. Thomas and his wife Cecilia raised their eight girls in Brockville, Ontario while he was working for the Whyte Packaging Company. He was member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 in Brockville, Ontario. Thomas passed away in September 1953 at the age of 72 in Toronto, Ontario. CHAMULA, Steven Steven was born in Detva, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia) on May 6, 1921. He arrived in Canada in February 1939 for work, within a few weeks the political climate in Slovakia had drastically changed and was controlled by Germany. He learned English and worked in Port Colborne. In 1943, Steven enlisted in the Canadian Army in Toronto. He received military training in Brantford, Camp Borden and Nova Scotia. He was deployed from Halifax on troop ship Mauretania, arriving in Glasgow, Scotland. He left Aldershot, England by convoy to Naples, Italy with 1st Division for combat, becoming the 48 Highlanders of Canada. Steven was wounded by shrapnel in the leg. The Canadian Troops left the Italian front in spring 1945 joining Canadian forces in North West Europe. Steven volunteered to stay in occupying forces in Germany with Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment. He was discharged from military service in Canada in 1946. He is a five-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Shelburne, ON. CHAMBERLAIN, Stanley Joseph “Stan” Stanley was born in Douglas, Ontario on September 4, 1897. His family moved to North Bay, Ontario. On May 2, 1916, having served two years with cadets, he enlisted with the 159th Battalion Canadian Infantry. He trained in Camp Borden, playing bass drum in the field band and was subsequently transported to Purfleet, England. From there, he was transferred to the 4th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops and moved to Boulogne, France. After the war, he returned to North Bay, ON. He was discharged on April 1, 1919 where he worked as a clerk with the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He and his wife Florence Bale were avid Legionaries while raising their family. Stan passed away on May 2, 1963.
