109 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHAPMAN, James A. “Jim” Jim was born in Windsor, Ontario on March 4, 1928. He enlisted into the American Army in 1950 and served until 1952 as Sergeant with the 3rd Infantry, 39th Artillery Division. After his discharge on December 8, 1952 he settled back in Windsor where he still resides. Jim recently was awarded the quilt of Valour from the quilters of America, also an Ambassador of Peace Medal from Korea. CHARTIER, Gaëtan Pierre Gaëtan was born in Strathford Centre, Quebec on February 8, 1962. He enlisted in the Army on June 1, 1979. Gaëtan commenced his studies in the Royal Military College St. Jean as an Army military engineer and switched to the Air Force Communication and Electronics. In May 1988 he left the regular force and joined the reserve as a military engineer in the 3rd Field Engineering Squadron. Gaëtan was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration. He was discharged on June 15, 1993. He is a Royal Canadian Legion member of Branch 638, Kantata. CHAPUT, Morel Theodore Morel was born in Pembroke, Ontario in 1922. After a short stint in the Lanark & Renfrew Scottish Regiment, a Reserve Unit, he enlisted in the Regular Armed Forces at the age of seventeen. He was a member of the Infantry, the Midland Regiment and then the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He was part of the Canadian contingent of approximately 15,000 Canadians that stormed the Beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and survived to tell the tale of “Hell on Earth”. He served in France, England, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He remained overseas until his discharge on May 22, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Campaign Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Maple Leaf Bar, the World War II Medal, the France-Canada Medal of Participation and a Veteran Affairs-Canadian Certificate of Appreciation with Lapel Pin. He is a sixty-year plus member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 72 in Pembroke. He has received numerous Certificates of Appreciation and was Veteran of the Year (2017). At the age of 97, he still lives on his own, and his mind is very clear, and he has vivid memory of his exploits during WWII.
