119 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CONNELL, Morley William Morley was born in Victoria County, Ontario on January 31, 1932. He enlisted in the Army in March 1951 with the 50th Medium Anti-Aircraft. He served in Canada and was discharged in October 1956. He is a Royal Canadian Legion Life Member of Kanata Branch 638 and served as their Sergeant at Arms for twelve years. COOK, Thomas “Tom” Tom was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 14, 1932. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, 1st Royal Canadian Horse Artillery on September 14, 1952 and served in Canada and Korea. In Korea, the Canadian artillery stopped firing high explosive shells at Chinese positions a few minutes before the truce was signed, even though officially both sides were permitted action until the ceasefire went into effect exactly twelve hours after the truce signing. The only action by Canadian gunners was the firing of four smoke shells. The last smoke shell was fired by a crew which included Gunner Tom Cook. Following his honourable discharge on September 30, 1954, Tom joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment Reserves. He was employed by the City of Toronto for a total of 26 years in the Department of Roads and Traffic before layoff due to government cutbacks. He eventually moved to Kirkfield where he resides with his wife Fran. Tom is a 52-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion and currently a member at the branch in Coboconk, Ontario. COOK, Herbert Oliver “Herb” Herb was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on August 28, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on June 21, 1940 with the Highland Light Infantry. He served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. The Highland Light Infantry regiment participated in the D-Day landings on Juno Beach. He received the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Herb was discharged on March 4, 1946. On his return he married and had four children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 inActon, Ontario. Herb passed away on June 7, 2005.
